As a sub-unit of 16th Field Regiment, 163 Battery plays an important part in allowing the Regiment to meet its commitments for specific operational contingencies. The Battery achieves this by contributing to a 120 man full field battery for the New Zealand Army ready reaction force.

The Battery has a secondary role of contributing to the forming of a 16th Field Regiment infantry company. It is a Direct Support Battery to 2/1 Battalion and to Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles.

In addition to its combat role, the Battery has various ceremonial and civil aid activities.
