4 Survey Troop

Return to WW2 artillery

Formed at Papakura on 3 September from field and coast artillery and from survey and NZEF personnel. The troop left for New Caledonia at the end of December 1942 but spent most of its time near Guadalcanal. In 1944 the troop took over meteorological observations for the RNZAF in addition to its own duties.

Original Commander: Capt Sanderson

After active combat duties, the troop made the first accurate mapping of the Green Islands group. The troop was disbanded in October 1944 with some of its members reassigned to the Middle East.
