WHEREAS trails provide citizens with excellent recreation, educational and transportation opportunities, preserve critical open space, create natural corridors for wildlife and enhance the communities they touch;
WHEREAS there is a profound relationship between people, place, and trails;
WHEREAS artists, cultural and heritage organizations enhance the ability of trails to unite our citizens in understanding and appreciating our diverse cultural heritage, empowering them to honor the past and imagine the future;
THEREFORE be it resolved by the signatories of this Resolution and by all who witness these proceedings that:
We recognize Millennium Trails as a significant public/private partnership that allows communities to strengthen their quality of life by preserving open spaces, interpreting history and culture and enhancing recreation and tourism;
We extend great appreciation to the millions of individuals who contribute to trails and the cultural life of our nation directly through their donations, public service and leadership in every community;
We acknowledge with sincere gratitude the leadership and investment on the part of businesses, government agencies and foundations that provide the human, financial, and material resources for trails and our cultural life; and
We commit ourselves and encourage all those at the federal, state and local levels--mayors, country commissioners; city and county managers; governors; legislators, agency heads, business leaders and citizens--to strengthen leadership and increase support for a sustainable network of trails and their cultural values for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations, thereby defining our legacy as a nation.
