Metis

Batoche National Historic Site
As with most Canadian websites, you have a French version available. Louis
Riel selected Batoche as the headquarters of his "Provisional Government of
Saskatchewan." Several buildings have been restored here which depict the
lifestyle of the Mtis between 1860 and 1900.

Metis Bison Hunters
Learn about the importance of the bison (called a virtual supermarket,
providing all the necessities of life) to the Mtis and how their lifestyle
revolved around it. A French version is available via a link at the bottom
of this page. See also Riel's Deerskin Coat.

Mtis in general, Louis Riel in particular, and issues such as forced

Metis Nation
A brief page from the Metis' union (local #57) at Fort Providence. You can
click on the "index" page or the "band" page to get further information
about the Dene -- their people and way of life. The sections about the Dene
elders is my favourite section here.

Metis Resource Centre
Another good site, full of facts. Read the section for "Biographies". The
Metis have produced some truly remarkable people. You'll find them in the
"Newsletter Excerpts".

Northwest Resistance
A bilingual site - choose French or English. The first section deals with
the 1885 rebellion in the Canadian west by the Metis against the government
of Canada. You can view the chronology of events, or select one of six links
to biographies of the major players in this story. There are also internal
links within the chronology which will give you the biographies. The second
section deals with Alexander Campbell's 7th Fusiliers, the military
battalion sent to quell the rebellion. It's scanned pages in Campbell's own
words, and the pages are a tad slow-loading.

The Other Metis
A huge site, lots of pages already and more on the way, dealing with the
Metis people of Canada, region by region.
