For Kids

Audio: Judah Maccabee, the Hammer by Peter and Ellen Allard, a children's song with lyrics and a sound clip. Also here. Judas Maccabeus: Rebel of Israel by Mark Healy, illustrated by Richard Hook. According to the publisher's blurb, it "Recounts how Judas Maccabeus led rebel Jewish forces to a surprizing victory over the Roman [sic] army."

The Hanukkah story retold for kids. This appears to be based on a claymation version of the story, although the details are unclear. In this version Matityahu (Matthias) starts the rebellion not by killing a Jewish renegade sacrificing a pig, but by knocking over the statue of a Greek god.

The Judah Maccabee doll

Judah Maccabee: The Huggable Hanukkah Hero from Heroic Productions, "Where Jewish heroes become great toys." $29.95 at present. It doesn't seem that anything's been developed beyond Judah. also sells the Judah Maccabee doll. I don't really need to give another commercial vendor, but I love the domain name so much.

"Barbie clothes, Judah Maccabee doll highlight Chanukah gift ideas for kids" by Amy Sara Clark, JTA.

Interview with Michael Herman, maker of the Judah Maccabee doll, founder of "Heroic Production." Herman thought through a lot of the issues:

"As for his body, I imagine he wasn't a scrawny guy because he was a warrior, but on the other hand, he didn't have the bulging muscles of Arnold Schwartzenegger because the Jews didn't value body building like the Greco-Syrians."

Maccabeans! "Legendary Jelly Beans" (Kosher).

Press release about the jelly beans.
