An excellent, scholarly entry in the 1901-1906 Jewish Encyclopedia. Entry by Samuel Krauss and Richard Gottheil. Contains some scanning errors, but the original pages can also be viewed. Wikipedia: Judas Maccabeus. Exceedingly detailed page. Note: If you don't know, Wikipedia is a sort of "open source" encyclopedia. Anyone can change it, anytime. Surprisingly, it works. But there are persistent problems—particularly bias—and you can never trust a fact 100%. The best feature is undoubtedly the scope of the project and the massive hyperlinking.
