Pictures

No one knows what Ibn Battuta looked like. All pictures are just guesses. Still, people can cling to them fiercly. Tim Mackintosh-Smith writes in his Travels with a Tangerine that the Hotel Ibn Battutah in Tangier purports to have a picture of the explorer. The author pointed out to the receptionist that it was a photograph.

"Yes. A very old photograph."

"And he is smoking a water-pipe."

"Ah, Ibn Battuta knew that water-pipes are healtheir than cigarettes."

"But tobacco came from America and photography was only invented a hundred and fifty years ago."

"Ibn Battuta", said the receptionist, with unanswerable finality, "was a very great traveller."

That said, here are some pictures of Ibn Battuta, discovered here and there on the web.
