The African-American
Census, 1838

Philadelphia, PA

This project focuses on the census of the African-American population in Philadelphia, which was taken by the Pennsylvania Abolition Society in 1837. One of the initial aims of this census was to utilize the data collected in order to counter attempts to disfranchise blacks in Pennsylvania. Today, however, this data may serve a variety of uses and may be of particular relevance to historians of African-American Philadelphia as well as to those interested in genealogy.
