PREPARATOPM FOR OPERATION
The following checks and inspections should be made in accordance with railroad rules.
BEFORE BOARDING LOCOMOTIVE
Inspect for broken, worn, lose, or dragging parts (brake rigging, brake shoes, wheels, traction motor commutator covers, etc.)
Check for leaks from outside piping.
Properly position all drain and cut-out cocks.
Check proper connection of air hoses and jumper cables.
Check fuel supply on the fuel tank sight glass.
For passenger service join the locomotive and passenger car jumper cables as shown in Figure 15.
For operating the locomotive alone or in freight service, plug the captive 480-volt jumpers back into their adjacent receptacles to prevent dragging.
NOTE : All cars in the consist must face with the "A" end in the same direction.
AFTER BOARDING LOCOMOTIVE
Remove rags, tools, etc., from moving parts and electrical equipment.
Check the diesel engine lubricating-oil supply. Oil level should indicate FULL on the measuring gage with the engine idling. A measuring gage (dipstick) is located on the left side of the engine and is marked LOW - FULL.
Check the governor oil supply. The sight glass on the governor should be full of oil. After the engine is started, the oil must be visible between the marks on the sight glass.
