A Collection of Magazine Covers

'The War Illustrated'

The following links access a simple collection of some 60 magazine covers of the British newsmagazine 'The War Illustrated' taken haphazardly from the years 1915, 1916 and 1917. There is no particular order to the collection of images, they have simply been chosen because of availability and because of their striking dramatic appearance in general.

As has been remarked upon previously, the use of hand drawn illustrations in the newsmedia was a common practice, especially since photographs of actual battle scenes were difficult to come by and dangerous to make in the first place. There is a understandable prevalence of scenes showing British feats of arms on these covers. Many of the covers were drawn by Stanley Wood.
