The New Jersey Special Olympics Summer Games, at the College of New Jersey, featured great weather, large crowds, a lot of activity and a really good time. Congratulations to the more than 2,500 volunteers that helped make this a great event for the 2,000 registered athletes. A list of the units that helped will be posted as soon as possible.

The young scouts did an outstanding job over the weekend and can be proud of themselves. Scouts were running some of the games and helping with other tables. You could find scouts under the costumes for Daffy Duck, Yogi Bear, the Pineapple, and some other characters. Several times, I heard people call "we need some help here, send us a Scout." There was a good feeling at the event, you could see that the participants were enjoying all the attention.

Many thanks to Joan Nester for organizing and co-ordinating Scout participation in the NJ Special Olympics. Joan has been planning and preparing for this all year, and she seemed to be everywhere over the weekend. Joan and all our scouts deserve our appreciation.

Ray Williams is one of the volunteers. Ray has been with the Scouts since 1958 (40 years) in the Watchung Council. Ray, a ShopRite employee, has worked with the Special Olympics since its beginnings 10 years ago. Ray says that he "just feels good helping all the kids."
Lt. Daniel Cosgrove is another volunteer. Dan is with the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run, associated with the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department and run by members of New Jersey Law Enforcement. Dan said that the organization runs activities such as the Lincoln Tunnel Fun Run (the world's only run under water), the Polar Bear Plunge, the Torch Run Golf Classic, and much more. Last year, the Law Enforcement officiers raised more than $710,000.00 to support the NJ Special Olympics. Dan and his fellow volunteers were running the hamburger and hot dog grills -- really hot work, but they were having a great time.
ShopRite had tents at several locations around the event, supplying food, drinks, hats, fruit, snacks, other things for everyone. ShopRite and its employee volunteers did a fine, community-based effort. Other corporate sponsors with tents included Exxon, Colgate, Blue Cross, Wayne PBA, Allied Straus Products. There were so many activities at this event, please let me know if I missed your booth.
