Camp Buck

Some tents are visible along the top of the ridge. Scouts would walk down to the road, then along the banks of the river to go swimming. Since the river was, at best, perhaps waist high, Scouts were limited to swimming, with no diving or swinging out on ropes or vines.

Much of the information about Camp Buck was provided by Doug Kiovsky of Hunterdon County Parks and Recreation. Doug has been documenting the history of many of the old camps in the area. I thank him for his generous help. We are searching for photos from the earlier days of Camp Buck, or any patches and stories associated with Camp Buck.

Hunterdon County Parks and Recreation acquired the Camp Buck property in 1974 as open space along the South Branch of the Raritan River. A small trail system through the parcel, named for the Pine Hill Section of the South Branch Reservation, was created for public use. A small pavilion still remains from camp days, though in sad decay.

Rosemary and I visited the Camp Buck property during August 2002. We walked the trail, stood on the cliff above the river, inspected the pavilion. What a wonderful feeling to think about all the young scouts that have camped here.
