FIELDBOOKS was set up in 1986 as a partnership between Peter Dennis and Paddy Griffith. We have published two titles:-

'Battle in the Civil War: Generalship and Tactics in America 1861-65' by Paddy Griffith, illustrated by Peter Dennis, 1986: ISBN 1 86 9871 00 6
A structured analysis of all aspects of Civil War combat, making a surprisingly technical and detailed coverage compressed into such a short space (This doubtless explains why it has been used as a set text by several universities). Sub-sections cover the army commander's perspectives in first setting up and then running a battle: the arts of generalship at the level of Corps and Division command; and then a long section on the regiment's battle, including minor tactics, weapons, combat psychology - and the casualties.

The three 'General Burnside' figures at the foot of each page of this website are taken from the copious artwork in this book.

'This book represents outstanding value for money, and I strongly urge you to get a copy' - Wargame Review

'Battle in Africa 1879-1914' by Howard Whitehouse, illustrated by Peter Dennis, 1987 - but now sadly all but out of print: ISBN 1 869871 01 4.
Takes the reader through the strategic pressures and concepts which led the Europeans and Africans into an increased level of conflict in the later Victorian era, then shows how a typical European expedition was collected, and how it organised its march into enemy territory (It was normally very strong in transport, porters and artillery, but very light on infantry and cavalry). The way each side planned for battle is analysed, as well as the many different types of outcome that might result, from 'horrible disasters' to 'glorious victories'. Guerrilla and siege warfare are covered, together with weapons, tactics and the fate of casualties.

Each book has 48 intensely-illustrated pages including some 30,000 words of text explaining the conditions of warfare and combat in the periods discussed. This is a unique approach which makes complex technical matters more instantly accessible and understandable than has been achieved by any previous type of military history.

Each has won extensive critical acclaim and has sold internationally. 'Battle in the Civil War' is available at most visitor centres on the battlefields themselves. 'Battle in Africa' is remarkable for its rare ability to see the late Victorian and Edwardian Imperial campaigns not only from the point of view of all the European participating nations - Portuguese, Italian and German as much as British and French - but also from the point of view of all the varied African powers that were being forced into submission.

Each book retails at $14.95 in USA or 6.95 in UK.
Please note that we can accept orders by e-mail, but we cannot accept credit- or debit- card payments - only cheques, please (payable to 'Fieldbooks').

Apart from the artwork shown on this page, further examples of Peter Dennis's work that are shown in this website are the two French colonial soldiers on the home page, and the front covers of 'Forward Into Battle' (2nd edition), 'Military Thought in the French Army', and 'Rally Once Again'.
