First let me say that: "I am PROUD to be an American". All of the men in my family and some of the women have proudly served in our Armed Forces the entirety of my life. Our family proudly honors the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and National Guard. My father gave his life that I might have the opportunity to become and adult and to say to our sitting President, George W. Bush: "Thank you for keeping our honor clean. Thank you for standing up to the world and remaining consistent in your decisions, for making our men and women in all of our Armed Forces proud to be Americans, proud to serve under your command, proud to defend this great nation of ours. THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT/GOD BLESS

Had you heard that President George W. Bush's grandfather Prescott Bush may have taken the skull bone of the indian chief Geronimo to Yale University in 1918 as a college club initiation?
The skull is on display during the Skull and Bones Society meetings at Yale University.

THANK YOU FOR THE OPPERTUNITY TO STATE MY CONCERS OF SOME THING THAT HAS BEEN SO WRONG, FOR SO LONG! I WISH TO CORRECT THE UNEXISTING TERM, [AMERICAN INDIAN]. FOR WE NATIVE PEOPLES OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY WERE NEVER BROUGHT HERE FROM INDIA, NOR EVER BEEN AMARICANS. THAT WAS WHAT THIS BUEATIFUL COUNTRY OF OUR'S WAS CALLED, AFTER IT WAS STOLEN FROM US!! INDIANS COME FROM INDIA, ONLY. AND AMERICAN'S CAN ONLY BE ANYONE WHO WAS BROUGHT HERE FROM OTHER PLACES, AND HAVE ACCEPTED THE NEW GOVERMENT, SINCE THE CONSTITUTION OF 1776. I HOPE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS THAT THE ORIGINAL PEOPLES ARE STILL NAMED BY THIER ORIGINAL NATIONS GROUPS. SUCH AS APACHES, COMANCHES, AND SO FOURTH. I WOULD LIKE TO PORPOSE THE REMOVAL OF THE TERM [AMERICAN INDIAN] FROM ALL OUR TEXTS AND FUTURE PUBLICATIONS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME; TITO AMAYA, P.O.Box 290996, Kerrville, Tx. I WELCOME ANY AND ALL STATEMENTS. RESPECTFULLY YOURS,TITO AMAYA

Thank you for the full text of Thomas Paine's "The Age of Reason." Paine himself pointed out the weaknesses of text on the last page of Part One: "...the mutability of language" among them. Be careful not to type these documents with a spell or grammar checker in operation. The words that seem wrong today were just right, when they were written. I made very good use of your copy, however, and thank you for it. It would have taken me a month to get it as good as you got it. They sure did love commas in the 18th century! These days it seems we can't recall what they were for. But I like even better their renditions of "any thing" and "every thing." Some spellings shouldn't change! Ted

I have nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for the the tribe and the person of Geronimo. My wife and I have four children, and each and erveryone of them have been given names after persons of great or important historical Value. In honour of Geronimo and of his later wife, we named our youngest son (born in 1998 on january 8th) GOYAKLY, and our youngest child, a girl (born in 2001 on may 3th) AHLOPEY. We are aware of the fact that we may have deleted or added letters in the given names of those who we're given the original names, but our children, just as myself, cary names consisted of 7 letters, that's why. Thank you all for hounoring the memory of such great persons and working so hard to get your site upon the internet and keeping it up to date. Congratulations! Siceraly yours. our prayers are for you and your family today. We as a family have been through this type of surgery and no how long the recovery takes.
Go slow and take care so you can regain your strength and your ability to resume life outside of your home.
Maybe you can write another book or get going on Hillary's campaign for the presidental election in 2008. She'd have my vote.
Get well soon - Debra

Studies presidential politics and political dynamics. Feels current U.S. presidential race will tilt towards John Kerry given "average Joe" voter's sanguine feelings toward service-sector employment by contrast to revive traditional eastern seaboard(union/labour)constituencies(Massachusetts). Feels the Reagan Era(1980-1986 culture)will be very tousled by coming generations. Is Republican, centrist with liberal and conservative mixtures.

The term "Legend" usually refers to an exagerated GREATNESS, specifically in General Lee's case, (or the opposite;i.e.Barbarism in the infamous) which, over time, blurs the line between historical truth and popular opinion that insists that such a person's life reflects(ed) and exemplifies(ed) such superlative achievement, character, and well-placed loyalty to one's fellows and to those timeless truths which the teachings of Christ deem "eternal"---honor,devotion not only to one's duty to God and country, but to one's fellows no matter what their station in life, that it is almost humanly impossible to be the full truth of any man.(Note:To this day Lee's the only cadet EVER to graduate from West Point without a SINGLE demerit!) General Lee was a warrior and a reconciler.Such humility as Lee's -- his most noble virtue -- was/is so rare that virtually all Americans of a "Re" United States felt and still feel a devotion to Robert E. Lee that is without parallel in our nation's history (George Washington Included). It's my own feeling, shared by a great many millions of Americans, living and dead,Union and Confederate, north and south, that General Lee devoted all of his years (not just as an educator at West Point and Washington College -- now Washington and LEE University) -- to teaching young men how to be not only good Americans but good men. That is fitting of General Lee indeed. I don't know who was the first to say: "For America to be great, she must first be good." Arguably one of the greatest military strategists and tacticians in history, I believe when God greeted Robert E. Lee to his heavenly home and said: "Well done, my good and faithful servant.",that he was acknowledging Lee's humility in helping his fellow man and his sincere devotion to his selfless endeavors, likely more than any other single individual, to do his part and much more to "Heal" a divided and war-ravaged America. The truths that were apparent to Lee almost instinctively and which he lived by all his life, conclusively make the case that Lee's "Legend" was in every respect his life.

I am a diehard Philadelphian now living in California and doing research on Richard Allen. What a shame that you have not included Matthew Carey's "Short Account of the Malignant Fever Lately Prevalent in Philadelphia...." in your document list. It is an incredible history of the terror the city experienced during the yellow fever plague in 1793, so well documented by Mr. Carey. However, I feel it would also be a good opportunity now, some 210 years later, to right the prejudicial slant that Mr. Carey put upon the black citizens of the town in accusing them of profiteering from the assistance they gave durin that terrible time. Perhaps, another document to include, then, might be Richard Allen's "Narrative of the Procedings of the Black People during the Late Awful Calamity....", his response to Carey's criticisms.
I was fortunate enough to find and purchase an original third edition of Carey's pamphlet in Portland, OR. It is interesting to me to learn that Carey (and Lea) is still in business. Also interesting that Richard Allen's legacy has grown to influence millions. What a history we have.

Rather than some comments I would have a favor to ask: Do you have a bybliography of William Byrd, or of some other author who described London in the '700 and '800? I really need it because of my thesis. Thanks a lot for your attention and help.

I'm an honours degree student at the University of Saskatchewan, and I wanted to let you know that you have no clue what your discussing, especially about the Seven Year's war in Canada. One point I'll make is that you said that the war was for trading rights, actually trading rights and boundary rights were decided in the War of 1812, when Canada kicked the USA's ass. The Seven Years war was about the conquest of Canada.

this is the only site i have found that speaks of the american revolution and holland. can you suggest any sources for further reading. my family history suggests that my ancestor came over in a holland contingent to reinforce cornwallis but this appears impossible after reading that holland was neutral before joining the patriot side. i would like to know for certain that no hessians came from holland. wonderful site you have, and id love to hear any suggestions you have for further reading.

Abouth Chapter 18 in GERONIMOS OWN STORY: This picture does not show Naiche aka Nachez. (Naiche was also not the youngest son of Chief Cochise). The picture shows TAHZA aka Tahzay, (1846-1876), oldest son of Cochise, (abouth 1823-1874), only surviving of three childrens of Chief Cochise and his elderly Squaw Tesalbestinay. Tahza was husband of Geronimos sister Nod-Ah-Sti aka Nadaste aka Niome, (1848-1920). They had a son named Nino aka Nino Cochise, (1874-1984! he died 110 years old-), This one became Chief of the tribe as successor after Tahzas dead and his halfbrothers Naiches deportation. Tahza died while on a trip to Washington on pneumonia. NAICHE, second son of Chief Cochise and halfbrother of Tahza was allways together with Geronimo.
Naiches mother was Nahlekadeya, younger whife of Chief Cochise and also mother of Alcesay aka Alcise, the youngest one. Alcesay was scout in company of general Crook and later chief of the Wite-mountain-Apaches.

I am very excited to find your web site. I did a google search on "Thomas Jefferson Letters" and this was the first item listed!
I am interested in finding out what music Thomas Jefferson liked. I want to know if he had Bach, Handel, and Beethoven. Did he play the clavier? did he have musicians visit?
I was hoping to get some hints on this by doing a word search on the Thomas Jefferson letters. For example searching on "bach" and getting back a list of letters where this name is found. The search feature on this web site doesn't seem to have this functionality. Can you suggest a way for me to proceed with my research into finding Thomas Jefferson's music preferences?

Thank you. This is a wonderful site for history teachers. I suggest you add James Madison's Federalist No.10. This essay helped overcome the fear of power held by many Americans in late 1780s. The "competing interests" idea is helpful in understanding (early) American politics.

A very useful resource for students and research!
While you have significant overlap with the somewhat larger University of Kansas American history documents collection within "Carrie" (http://www.ku.edu/carrie/docs/amdocs_index.html),overlap is probably a good thing because an internet "virtual library" can vanish in a flash if it loses its sponsor.
A document I did not find in either collection was the Pledge of Allegiance, either its original version or its current version, or the laws associated with its adoption. I suspect that the original plege may have had something to do with the period after the War Between the States (usually known by the oxymoron, Civil War), perhaps required of rebels before they would be considered eligible to serve in the US Congress.

Thank you, Thank you,
I used your sight for a college course that I had the opportunity to test out of. Using C.L.E.P., there are some classes in which a student can test out of providing they are knowledgeable on the subject. I already knew quite a bit but your site filled in the gaps. You condense just the right information that is necessary. Anyhow, I tested out of a class called U.S. Government and Politics. You helped save me $1200 :)

Wonderful site. However, like many, you have misspelled Harry S Truman's name. There is no "period" following the S. Mr. Truman had no middle name because his parents couldn't agree and instead chose the letter S to comply with the first letter of each one's parent's last name. Since there is no middle name, the period following the letter (which signifies an abbreviation) is not needed and misleading.

Is there a way to have my email address added to the site so people can contact me to discuss the essay?

- Galloway,Bob ([email protected]).
- 03-12-29 17:15
Following an open interest reading plan, I came across "Manifest Destiny" as the 3rd or 4th essay I read. While there is much scholarship evident in the article, the multitude of grammatical and typographical errors significantly detracts from a comprehensive reading. I trust more editorial scrutiny has been applied to the rest of the anthology.

Thank you so much for this site. I am an American high school student, researching for a paper on John Marshall. The biography I found on this site (via Google) was exactly what I needed. No other site or encyclopedia article I've seen so far has been as in-depth about Marshall's life before the Supreme Court, nor have they included the actual text of Marshall's opinions from his most famous cases. I looked around some, and the entire site seems thorough, detailed, and absolutely credible. Thank you for providing this resource, and for the time and energy you obviously put into maintaining it. :)

It is nice to find a quality website about history, like yours. Americans may think they know all about our history, but they may be mistaken. Especially at a time like this, we are proud to be Americans. This website is fantastic because it includes not only the good parts in American history, but also the bad ones. To truly be Americans we have to understand our history. We have to accept the good and bad parts of our past. Dark chapters in American history like slavery are not always easy to forget, hard as we might try to. So when you wave that American flag, just remember we as a country and a people we are not perfect, and we never will be. We have to do our best in the hard times, and live on, being free Americans forever.

I am British and a great admirer of the United States and an avid reader of US history. Your website is a bonus for me as it provides a usual and well-written source of information and references as a basis for further study. I understand some of the information is based on US government sources and it occurs to me that it would be a great advantage if such information was somehow made more available to us Europeans. It might serve in some way to offset the cyncism and hostility that sometimes surfaces over here based on ignorance. Also have you considered providing an outline based on the geolgicla/ Geographical evolution of your country?
With many thanks

Ira was a member of the Vermont Committee of Safety and instramental in the formation in the Republic of Vermont and the eventual state. After his capture Ethan was a broken man, prone to drink. Ira Allen, along with Thomas Chittenden and others are the REAL fathers of Vermont. Ethan merely occupied an earthen works fort manned by less than 15 troops with a force of approximately 100. And he was sharing command with Benedict Arnold.
Perhaps, when you decide to alot the task of writing biographies, it would be adventagous to try to use historians that are close to the source material.
Very Respectfully,
Frederic B. Cobb II

Hello,
I am a student at University of Vienna. As I will have an exam on the American party system from 1800 to 2000 in a few days, I'd like to post a few questions here which I have come across and couldn't find an answer. Those questions are:
1.) On a paper the professor gave out he wrote: "American revolution: A conservative revolution?"
--> What does he refer to by saying "a conservative revolution"?
2.) On the same paper it says "Jackson and the 'marketrevolution' "
--> The "marketrevolution" is unknown to me. When thinking of the Jacksonian Democracy, the spoil system, the nullification crisis or the Second National Bank comes to my mind, and there was the panic of 1837 under the Van Buren administration, but marketrevolution ... ?
3. Time of Jackson ... "The contra-coalition: Pietists vs. Liturgicals" ... Some hints? I know what pietists and liturgicals are, but contra-coalition?
4. In the time of Reconstruction: "Bourbons, Machine-Politics and Muck-Rakers" ... Bourbons? Machine-politics?
5. "The rainbow coalition without a centre" ... I don't know what he means by saying "without a centre".
He also wrote: "The Civil War, the betrayed revovultion, part II" --> the betrayed revolution, part II?
If someone finds the time to answer those questions (just a few words would be perfect), I'd be very pleased.
Thank you and good bye from Vienna,
Paul

I am 1/4 Apache, 1/4 Spanish and 1/2 German. Funny thing is that as long as I can remember I have tried to trace my heritage. Its is a strange combination of nationalities to have. My dominate traits happen to be the native american ones. I find so many simularities to the way I look to the pictures I find. I have the high cheek bones and the dark reddish color of skin. And a Grandmother that has long passed whom is where I inherited my Apache blood. I long to understand this time, and the reasons for my being. This is partially what interests me in the history of Geronimo. What I have learned so far is that the native americans were warriors because they have always had to fight. They have constantly fought for their rights to live and prosper within their own tribes and land. Now in this day and age, with the U.S. trying so desperately to be free..to give every person of color the right to freedom, I have realized the great injustice of the native american people. The suffering of this tribe, and many others is almost too much to understand. Will Geronimos dreams ever come true? When will his own people be a part of society and not discouraged to live the way that they want to live? Has it happend yet? In this year of 2003, or are we still learning?

I enjoyed your biography on Ethan Allen. Many members of my Mallory family left Ct to settle in the Green Mountains and were members of the Green Mountain Boys. In the Bio of Ethan Allen Dr. Samuel Adams is mentioned. Samuel Adams came from Newtown Ct with Zaacheus Mallory, Phineas Hurd, Capt Jehiel Hawley and his brothers. The came to reinforce a group, largley the Searl family. Zaccheus Mallory's son David was a student of Dr Adams, but took opposites sides in the land disputes. A confrontation took place, and this time Adams fired...killing David Mallory. Adams was forced to flee to Canada. David's brother Amos Northrup Mallory took his place in the militia.
The beginning of the Revolution found a large portion of the citizens of Arlington sypathizers of the Tory cause. Sooner or later many of the principle landowners and influential men of the town either voluntarily left or were driven out, and their estates confiscated by the Provincial Government. (David may have been married to Susan)
In the early part of the struggle, an event occurred in Arlington, which can perhaps be best given in the language of Rev. F.A. Wadleigh: After the battle of Hubbardton, Colonel Warner and his men came south to Manchester, where they stopped for a time. It was probably during this progress that another tradedy occurred worthy of record. Men were sent out as usual for provisions. Colonel Lyon with a company, of whom David Mallory was one, started for the purpose of taking cattle from the Tories. Samuel Adams collected a company for resistence. As Mallory had been a member of his family (having studied medicine with him) he warned him of the probable consequences. Hard words passed, and they separated to execute their respective intentions. Colonel Lyon's company collected a drove of cattle and were driving them up from "down" river," or West Arlington. Opposite the present residence of Solomon Goeway is an island on which Adams and his men were concealed. As soon as Mallory appeared Adams showed himself and ordered him to stop. A threat was the only reply. Adams coolly said that in case himself was shot there were mean ready who would instantly riddle him. Upon this Mallory raised his piece, but not being quick enough was instantly shot down by Adams. Just then a horn was heard calling laborers to dinner. This was taken as a signal for the gathering of the Tories. Lyon's men fled, the cattle returned to their owners, and the wounded man, abandoned by friends and foes, with difficulty got to the roadside. He was taken up by one passing by and carried to the house of Ebenezer Leonard, where after a few hours he died." Adams fled to Canada, and in 1778 his property was confiscated and his family sent within the British lines. At the battle of Bennington it is said that men from Arlington were fighting on each side, and when Burgoyne surrendered five or six of the inhabitants of this town were among those serving in his army and were made prisoners. History of Bennington County

Thank you very much for your scholarly efforts. History is a validation of Truth, where the facts of the past are unable to be changed by the prejudices and special interests arising from humanity's failed intention or invention. Time, itself confirms the absolute of Law borne witness to in the immutable natural order and in repetitive human behavior. We just became aware of your work. It will be frequently referenced, because of its quality and comprehension. You have included many documents that are often hard to find in traditional libraries, and made them easily accessible to a worldwide community. Particularly relevant to the progression of civilization is the information condensed it your area entitled "From Revolution to Reconstruction, ... and afterwards". The history of the Constitution is really applicable to all cultures and all societies. The Founding Fathers based an order of law upon reality gained from the study of governments and societies 500 years before Christ. It was about Truth and justice.
Thank you again, and continue your good work.

Many thanks for this project. I have bookmarked it. I am disappointed that, of Martin Luther King's speeches, you have chosen only the most popular, "I Have a Dream". Perhaps the most important one concerning the breadth of his thinking is "Why I am Against the War in Vietnam" delivered at New York City's Riverside Church, not very long before his death. It would also appear to be important in regard to the history of the period and the changing consciousness regarding the U.S. involvement in that war.

The other brothers of my dad are Wood,Marvin,Bright,Fred, and Bill(William). I enjoyed reading this article. I am only interested in finding my roots not trying to put any claims on anything. What a wonderful website and as I sit here browsing it on the eve of the holiday in which we memoralize those who have fought and died in the name of freedom and liberty, under the glow of an orange level terrorist threat I cannot express more deeply how appreciative it is to see a collection of documents and essays that are valuable to Americans but also to freedom loving people throughout the world. The work is immense and thorough. I hope there is opportunity to expand it to include influential Europeans in the areas of freedom and liberty, Voltaire, Sarte, etc, etc. For the ideas and notions these men set forth are the cornerstones of the foundation that is America.

I am currently attending TSU and am taking "US History after 1877" One of our assignments was to give a review on historical web sites. I am very pleased with the one that you have established. This is a fantastic site for information on Geronimo, I found it very easy to navigate through the chapters of his life. The pictures were great and it was very interesting to see his view point.

In a way, it is sad to read about the trials and tribulations of Thomas Paine's life, but on the other hand it is enheartening to read about a man who had such forward ideas that even nearly two centuries after his death, his concepts are truly modern, logical, and reasonable. He was one of the heroes of the American revolution.

I'm part of a local group writing a curricula for our local high school students on the development of trade and banking in the early American republic. Some of our local - Beverly, Massachusetts - merchants/politicans were involved with Alexander Hamilton (notibly George Cabot). I very much enjoyed your essay on Hamilton and his contribution to the United States. It helped me to understand him and his policies far better than I did before. Sadly his legacy is neglected in American history classes today. Holland seems to have a fine group of American studies programs (I've used a banking site as well). Thank you for your contributions.

in fact it is a picture of Lieutenant Charles Gatewood, whom I'm surprised was never mentioned in this story. Lt. Gatewood was one of the very few white men that Geronimo had any respect for. It was he who, along with some apache scouts, that found Geronimo. Gatewood was sent on orders from Gen. Miles to offer Geronimo an unconditional surrender and to meet the Gen., at Skeleton Canyon. Well theres alot more to the story, and I would have to sit here and write for about a day or two just to tell you the whole story. I have read alot about American history and the American Indians are my favorite. I can go on and on and on and on and on.

His first wife died and he married,in 1908, the widow, Charity Jane (Farrington) Wallace, whose husband William Vannoy Wallace took sick down town, Lawton, and was brought home and soon died. They buried him on Christmas Eve 1905. The site of William V. Wallace's grave is not known by the family. Ted had some peach seeds on which Geronimo had carved Indian heads and given to Ted Lenhart. Geronimo died of pneumonia, in 1909, at Fort Sill, where he and 341 other Apache prisoners of war were brought in 1894, where they lived in villages on the range. The Apache, Geronimo, was born in June 1829, his birth name was No-doyohn Canon. A picture of Geronimo's grave at Fort Sill Okla: http://sill-www.army.mil/pao/geronimo.gif.
