PRESERVING TENNESSEE'S CIVIL WAR RAILROAD HERITAGE

Because the state's railroads played a substantial role accross a vast geographical area, Tennessee's railroad heritage constitutes an important component of the state's, and indeed of the nation's, history.  This rich heritage, both technolgoical and human in character, deserves preservation for the enlightenment and understanding of current and future generations.  As with most heritage resources, the physical remnants of the early railroads grow increasingly scarce, so that it becomes vitally important to preserve these few survivors which speak to the realities of the past.  The following tables provide a wide variety of information relating to the preservation of Tennessee's surviving Civil War railroad physical resources.
