   Eric,

Steve, I write this letter with mixed emotions. My husband reported for duty
on the Glover in early December of 1970, six months after our marriage. I
followed him a week later to Newport. He stayed on as a Radioman and
when he was discharged on April 6, 1973, was ranked RM3. I remember him
telling me most of these same stories I read about on this page. We
remained married for almost 26 yrs when on Feb. 19, 1996 he passed away
from an asthma attack at the age of 44. He left me with a 21 yr. old daughter
Amy and a 12 yr. old son, John Rey Jr. These stories bring both tears of joy
at the remembrance and tears of sadness knowing he is not here any longer
to see this. I think the Navy would have been his career if he had not be the
RM on duty when 2 messages came in. 1. The ship was headed for a cruise
in the Arctic and 2. they were giving early outs to anyone who wanted one.
He wanted no part of that Arctic cruise, which I have heard never did happen
so he took both messages to the Captain and said I want the early out and
was out in two days. I have many pics of the ship coming and going from the
pier in Newport, including pics of the ship returning from the Med Cruise with
the rail lined with sailor, including John, in their dress blues. I love that
pic...the pier filled with waiting wives and babies and the sailors with their
white hats lined up on the rail. Unfortunately, all my pics are in storage in
Wisconsin, as my son and I have moved to Arizona. I am hoping to get all my
things here very soon and will also scan and share the pics I have. I was
onboard for the dependant's cruise and enjoyed it immensely. I only wish it
could have been an overnighter as was originally planned. The G U 11s, the
sea bats, the azores fiasco, and the nearby Russian ships on the Med cruise
were all great memories for me. I remember John coming back from that to
tell me all the stories and I loved it. I also have pics of one of the Russian
ships and from Naples and Barcelona and other stops on that cruise. An
entire album of them in fact. Well, I guess I have chewed your ear off
enough. If I did not mention his name...my husband was RM3 John K. Rey.
Take care and God Bless. Anyone who remembers John can view my tribute
page to him. From that page my navy page can also be linked to and if
anyone would like to send me pics for my sailor pix page I will be happy to
   add them
