Eric,
Great job on the Glover site. I was part of the crew that turned
Glover over to the USNS fleet on 16 June 1990. Some two years
prior she had returned to her roots as a research platform. We were
dry-docked in Charleston, SC to refit the bow mounted sonar with a
single-directional array and a new rubber window. Some six months
later we were again dry-docked in Boston, MA to retube the boilers
and put a new VDS fish with six(vice the original 3) towed arrays.
We then complete REFTRA at Gitmo and began many long months of
sonar testing with civilians from EDO on board. We spent many
hours in the test box tracking one and two of our own subs.
Prior to Glover's return to the research mode, we made numerous
Caribbean cruise in the drug enforcement actions, and a Northern
European cruise were we became the first USN shipto partake in and
complete Royal Navy Reftra in the post Falklands era.
She was a unique ship with a great spirit.
