Some time ago, I submitted information regarding an Edsall Class DE,
the USS HARVESON (DE 316) I served aboard in 1959-1960 when she had
been converted to the FIRST Radar Picket Escort Vessel, i.e.
USS HARVESON (DER 316). The site, Destroyers Online, identifies this
ship as the "Harveston." This is incorrect.
The USS Harveson was named for Lieutenant (jg) Herold Aloysius Harveson,
who was killed in action on December 7, 1941, while serving in USS Utah
at Pearl Harbor.
In August, 1957, she was assigned to Escort Squadron Seven based at
Pearl Harbor with the mission of manning Pacific early warning stations
defending the continental United States from surprise attack --- The
Pacific Barrier Patrol.
Attached and submitted is a photo of the USS HARVESON (DER 316) leaving
Pearl Harbor for patrol in 1959. I hope you will be able to correct
the information on the site and use the photo.
Thank you,
Archie M. Mustard, Lt(jg), USNR (ret.)
