DE 139 (Edsall class)
Subject: USS Farquhar (DE-139) Mark or Brad, I am writing to ask for your help. I found your E-mail link in the Destroyers Online web-site. In the Destroyers Online site there is a page about the DE-138 (Douglas Howard) and a request for information. I was unable to find a link directly from the DE-138 page, (Edsall Class DE). My father served in WWII on the DE-139, (USS Farquhar) in the North Atlantic and Pacific. (I am sorry to say that my father passed away this past June 10th. His name was Dudley Huggins, from Roanoke, Virginia. He was EM1 when honorably discharged in 1946 and was a member of DESA.) Apparently the Douglas Howard(DE-138), the Fiske(DE-143), and the Farquhar(DE-139) were assigned to the Escort Carrier Wake Island (CVE-65). The CVE-65 put into Casablanca July 20-24, 1944. On August 2, 1944, the De-138 and the DE-143 were detached from task group to investigate a sonar contact. The Fiske was sunk by torpedo. My father's ship, the Farquhar, picked up survivors of the the Fiske after the sinking. I am currently researching the DE-139, and trying to piece together a history of the ship's service. I would appreciate any help, links, or leads you could offer. Since these ships were close to each other in fate, (launch dates were only a month or so apart), their stories will undoubtedly be linked. If you cannot reply, please forward this message to interested persons. Thank You for any help you are able to provide, Penny L. Huggins
