I would like to help with information of the Southerland. I will try and get some of the

Commissioned:     Dec. 22, 1944
Stricken:         February 26, 1981
Fate:             ?


We are seeking information on the history of the USS Southerland and her crews.
Files may be E-mailed to us and we will incorporate them into these pages.

The Gearing Class has a new web master handling all of the e-mails for this class.

The Gearing Class as Constructed


Displacement:  2,425 tons (3,300 tons full load)
Length:        390 feet 6 inches
Beam:          40 feet 10 inches
Draught:       14 feet 4 inches (mean)
Machinery:     four Babcock & Wilcox boilers;
               Geared turbines.  2-shafts. 
Performance:   S.H.P.: 60,000 = 35 knots
Bunkerage:     740 tons
Range:         4,500 nautical miles at 20 knots
Guns:          six 5 inch DP; twelve 40 mm;
               eleven 20 mm

The USS Southerland DD-743 will be having a reunion in the year 2000 in Omaha, Nebraska. The date is September 7,8,9 and 10. I would also like for any shipmates, from any time period, to e-mail me and I will put you on the list.
