Pennsylvania

Pennsylvaina is the spelling shown on the original CCS graphic, and was left for posterity.

CCS: Ah, Yes, Pennsylvania - the Keystone state. To their credit, they use this as a symbol. But a lot more could be done to liven up state roadsides. You'll note I retained the Keystone in the background. This could also make a pretty cool licence plate. (Large version on Big Signs page)
RVD: I have been informed by Ed Beck and Michael Rudolf that a design very similar to this was used as a license plate design until 1975. Robert Johnson told me they kept the state outline on the motorcycle license plate as late as 1995.

From Albert Calis : Here's my design for the PA Turnpike. I based this design on that of the FL Turnpike.

From David Brunot of Keystone Highways: I don't think Pennsylvania needs a make over, but I was inspired by another sign. Along US 322 there are a few signs marking the 28th Division Highway. They are similar to the signs I'm submitting, but have a white background instead of black. I like the state name on the shield and the use of white on blue would make for easy combined usage with Interstate markers. Another look for Pennsylvania could be using the old Keystone Town Markers as a basis. Two and three digit numbers would use the same size sign. Originally I used yellow text, but they looked too much like New York county route markers. A dark purple background was used to match Pennsylvania’s flag. These examples would be found in the Port Allegany area. The original Keystone Town Markers can be found on Adam Prince’s site. http://www.gribblenation.com/papics/keystone/
