RVD: New Mexico uses a circle as part of their highway shield. They do add in local color with a red Zuni, but that fades fast. This new shield utilizes the state shape and adds in burnt orange from the state flag for a background. Dark red would be used for the state name down the left and the state's nickname (in fancier script) beneath. Even if the color fades, the sign is easily identifiable as New Mexico.
From Albert Calis: Here's my idea for a new design for New Mexico.
