Years: 1949 / present | |
Route: US 301 winds though Central Florida from the northeast to the Gulf coast. It is a four lane route from the state line to Callahan, a two lane road from Callahan to Baldwin (part of Jacksonville). From I-10 at Baldwin, it is a major four lane route, passing through the infamous speedtrap of Lawtey, Starke (Home of Ol' Sparky, Florida's Electric Chair), Waldo (another more infamous speedtrap), Hawthorne, and Ocala. The four lane section ends at Summerfield, south of Belleview. Two lanes carry the route south to its next fourlaned section from Trilby to Zephyrhills, passing through Dade City. US 301 is two lanes again till it crosses I-4 east of Tampa. From there to Riverview it is fourlaned again briefly until its last stretch of two lane road. From west of Parrish to the end of the route in Sarasota, US 301 is a four lane road with mostly local traffic. This section also services Palmetto and Bradenton with US 41.

Drive: The route from Tampa to Palmetto used to be US 41, and has fairly wide right-of-way. It is also the least well-maintained route south from the Tampa area - I-275 / US-19, I-75, and US-41 all carry traffic between Tampa and Sarasota in addition to US 301. |
Alternate US 301 (Decommissioned) | Length: 14 mi.
Termini: Jct US 301 in Citra to Jct US 301 / 441 in Ocala | Years: 1978 / 1981
Route: This is the former route of US 301 north of Ocala. Found on a few local maps of Ocala, it started at US 301 in Citra, Florida and followed current CR 200A through Sparr and into town on Old Anthony Rd, (now Jacksonville Rd.) from Anthony, then on 20th St to US 301. AAA shows this as Bus US 301 on state maps from the 1970's to the 1990's, even though it has been turned over to the county of most other maps.

Drive: July 2001: The southern end of this route is an extension of Metro Ocala, the northern half is a scenic drive through horse country. 301 Plaza is still in operation, despite the lack of its namesake highway. I had a nice chat with a lady working at Miller's Discount there. This would have been an odd business route if ever signed that way. It makes a decent alternate to the more modern, bland highway. "Scenic" US 301 would not have been out of place here. I thing the 'far' sign in the Plaza picture is the older one. |
Business US 301 | Length: 1.4 mi.
Termini: Dade City | Years: 1980's / present
Route: In Dade City: On 7th Street. The old alignment of US 98 / US 301 though downtown Dade City. The last time I drove through there, 11-25-1998, there were no reassurance signs, only the signs directing traffic onto the Business Route from US 98 / US 301.

"Hidden" state number: FL 35
Co-signed with: Bus US 98
