Orlando Kissimmee

US 92 Length: 159 mi.
Termini: FL / US: Daytona Beach to Saint Petersburg Years: 1926 / present
Route: US 92 begins in Daytona Beach at an intersection with FL A1A, becomes a four-lane highway, then passes through De Land, Sanford, Casselberry, Maitland, Orlando, and Kissimmee, where it drops back to two-lane connecting road to Haines City. US 92 crosses Polk County to Lakeland, emerging on the far side of Lakeland as a two-lane route to Plant City. In Plant City it is a four lane highway, but regains its two lane status until it hits I-4 east of Tampa. US 92 is a major highway, with four or five lanes for most of its route in Tampa. It crosses over to St. Petersburg on one of the four bridges to cross Tampa Bay, the Gandy Bridge. US 92 ends in St. Petersburg near City Hall at an intersection with FL 595, which was US 19 in the past.
Counties: Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas
"Hidden" state numbers: FL 600 Daytona Beach to Lakeland; In Lakeland : FL 546 west on Lake Parker Blvd which becomes Memorial Blvd at the Junction with US 98 at Lake Parker Ave. US 92 follows Memorial Blvd west to Wabash Ave. It turns down south on Wabash Ave, following FL 517 south to rejoin FL 600 on George Jenkins Blvd; FL 600 Lakeland to St. Petersburg; FL 687 down 4th St in St. Petersburg
Co-signed with: US 17 Deland to Lake Alfred, FL 50 in Orlando, US 441 Orlando to Kissimmee, US 192 in Kissimmee, Alternate US 27 in Haines City (Before Alt US 27's decommissioning. Now it is "To FL 17"), US 98 in Lakeland, I-4 east of Tampa (I-4 actually runs in the 'median' of US 92), US 41 in Tampa, US 541 in Tampa (In the 1930's & 1940's. Now it is only "Bus US 41"), FL 687 in St. Petersburg
Drive: This route was supposed to be supplanted by I-4, but continues to exist in the shadows of the superhighway, much like a long 'Business Loop I-4'.
(7-99) US 92 is an urban mainline highway in Orlando, Lakeland, and Tampa. It should be avoided at rush hours. Much of the highway in these cities was paved with concrete. It is still there today in most places, but is slowly being replaced with wider asphalt south of Orlando and west of I-275 in Tampa.
(2000) The section in Kissimmee was recently adjusted so the mainline is what was once a "Truck Route" and the old route is just city streets. When they get the signs fixed, if ever, it means that there will be a short US 17 / 92 / 192 section in Kissimmee. Right now, the route is signed in converted truck route signage, which is poor in Florida.
(early 2001) During a major fire along I-4, US 92 became the major highway across Florida, much to the chagrin of local business owners from Eastern Lakeland to Haines City who had severe access trouble from the newly re-crowded highway. Mistimed signals were a large complaint.

Gone 1999

Business US 92 (Decommissioned) Length: 4.2 mi.
Termini: Jct US 92 at Lake Parker to Jct US 92 west of Lake Bonnet in Lakeland Years: @1961 / 1998
Route: Bus US 92 from US 92 at Lake Parker Drive, west on Gary Rd, south on Tyler Ave, west on Main St, a short jog on Hodges, then on George Jenkins Blvd to the Junction with US 92 (New Tampa Highway). The remaining big green signs that used to direct Bus US 92 traffic now read "To US 92" or "Downtown"
County: Polk
"Hidden" state numbers: FL 600
Was so-signed with: Bus US 98 through Downtown
Drive: This route still handles a lot of traffic. It is the original routing of US 92 though downtown Lakeland. Bus US 98 still had guide signs pointing to Bus US 92 in 1999. They were removed in 2001.

Truck US 92 (Orlando) Length: 3.4 mi.
Termini: Jct US 17 / 92 in Maitland to Jct US 17 / 92 in Winter Park in the Orlando Area Years: 1960's / present
Route: This route leads from US 17 / 92 along CR 438A, which is Lave Ake in Maitland and Kennedy Ave in Eatonville, to a city street in the very shadow of I-4, Wymore Rd, which I don't think is state maintained, and returns to a Junction with US 17 / 92 along FL 423.
County: Orange
"Hidden" state numbers: CR 438A, FL 423
Co-signed with: Truck US 17 along the entire route, CR 438A on Lake Ave and Kennedy, FL 423 along Lee Rd
Drive: (2001) Maps do not show this route, but it is pretty well maintained maintained and signed, and avoids a low rail trestle crossing US 17 / 92.

Truck US 92 (Kissimmee) (Decommissioned) Length: 1.6 mi.
Termini: Jct US 17/92/192/441 north of Downtown to Jct US 17 / 92 southwest of Downtown in Kissimmee Years: 1980's / 1999
Route: Truck US 17 / 92 in this area used to avoid Kissimmee's popular downtown area. US 17 / 92 was moved to this route in 1999. US 192 is also known as Vine St and CR 525 is also Bermuda Ave.
County: Osceola
"Hidden" state numbers: FL 530 along US 192, CR 525
Was co-signed with: Truck US 17 / US 192, CR 525
Drive: I liked driving through Downtown Kissimmee, but don't anymore now that US 17 / 92 was removed. I don't know why they did not pursue a Business designation. This segment of road is rather unremarkable, wide lanes and far less of the local feel that made Kissimmee a good place to visit.

US 192 Length: 76 mi.
Termini: FL / US: Jct FL A1A in Indialantic to Jct US 27 west of Walt Disney World in the "Four Corners" area. Years: 1926 / present
Route: US 192 begins at an intersection with FL A1A in Indialantic, and is effectively a four lane 'Business Spur I-95' connecting Melbourne to I-95 (Florida does not use Business Interstates). The two-lane highway from I-95 to Ashton (east of St. Cloud) is a high spot in the swampy marsh passing through Deer Park and Holopaw. From Ashton to US 27 near Walt Disney World, US 192 services the bustling, sprawling Kissimmee / St. Cloud resort district as a multilane divided highway, with much of the route 'mileposted' by the local tourist council to make visitor travel easier. Their website is at http://www.kissimmee-us192.com/
Counties: Brevard, Osceola, Polk, Lake
"Hidden" state numbers: FL 500 Indialantic to Kissimmee, FL 530 Kissimmee to US 27 west of Walt Disney World
Co-signed with: US 17 / 92 in Kissimmee, US 441 from Kissimmee to Holopaw
Drive: (7-5-99) There are intertmittently spaced passing areas (a passing lane, like on US 1 south of Miami) along US 192 from Holopaw to Melbourne. In Melbourne, the old route of US 192 through downtown is a dense business district and no longer signed US 192. Mainline US 192 is now on a bypass route around downtown. The end of US 192 in Indialantic, FL is mildly indefinite. AASHTO records show it as the junction with FL A1A. There is about 100 more feet of otherwise unnamed road leading out to the Atlantic Ocean beaches.
(1999) What was once a truck route for US 17 / 92 thru Kissimmee along part of US 192 is now mainline US 17 / 92, the old mainline is now city streets.
