A little ways up the Gap, pavement is already starting to fail.
Reportedly, this sort of pavement failure has been a problem for
a long time. According to Mr. Porter, this spot was particularly
troublesome, requiring frequent maintenance. The US park service
is planning to have the old pavement removed, if it doesn't slide
into Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, first. I think the roadbed will
be restored to the "wagon-train" days, at the dawn of
the 19th century. (Image 4 of 33)
