DELAWARE AND HUDSON
This page will cover from Binghamton south to Wilkes-Barre, PA and down to Allentown, PA.
The original D & H went only as far as Wilkes-Barre. However with the beginning of Conrail on April 1, 1976, it was extended to Harrisburg, Newark, NJ and later via trackage rights over CSX to Baltimore. This page will cover as far as Allentown. Prior to the Conrail merger, the D & H and the Lehigh Valley operated through trains known as NE-87 and NE-84. These trains ran from Potomac Yard in Alexandria, VA to Portland, Me. Using a combination of B & O, Reading, Lehigh Valley, D & H and Boston & Maine, these trains were the competition to the Penn Central.
The original D & H main south to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre began at Ninevah Junction, NY. Following the Guilford take over, they purchased the former Lackawanna main from Binghamton to Scranton and the original mainline was abandoned. This page will have several photos on the original main.
Very near to the state line is the small town of Windsor, NY. October 29, 1978.

The former Jersey Central track was used to climb out of the Wyoming Valley and head south to Allentown. At the top of the grade is narrow gap in the mountain known as Soloman's Gap. Here are three northbound trains about to descend the hill into Wilkes-Barre. The snow day pictures date from 1977, while the 7411 is from 1982.
In 1977, the D& H was very busy running the former Lehigh Valley Apollo trains between Newark, NJ and Buffalo. Some run through Union Pacific SD-40's lead a westbound Apollo through Mountaintop, PA. This is former CNJ track and the site of a yard at the top of the Ashley Planes.

After passing through the rather inaccessible Lehigh Gorge, the first town reached is Jim Thorpe, formerly known as Mauch Chunk. In the center photo, note the abandoned CNJ yard on the right. The train is on the LV. 1975.
Around the other side of the mountain from Jim Thorpe 7411 passes the remains of the Lehigh canal just west of Packerton. This train is BS-1 and is running from Bethlehem to Buffalo, NY. The format of this page is from west to east, so we will be back-tracking the train in our photo sequence.

On a very cold January 23, 1977, two Union Pacific SD-40's pass Lehighton Tower on the former Lehigh Valley main with the D & H Apollo train. Conrail later abandoned the LV east from here to Allentown and the tower was demolished. The track to the left is the CNJ ramp track built to connect the CNJ and the LV in 1965 as part of a track consolidation in order to reduce costs.
At one of my favorite locations, 7411 passes through Weissport, PA on the former CNJ side.
Our train passes through the New Jersey Zinc plant at Hazards, PA. Note the signal bridge and tower that controlled this once very busy point. All former Jersey Central and Chestnut Ridge Railway trackage.

On a beautiful day in 1975, C-628 613 leads a southbound NE-87 through the Lehigh Gap on the old CNJ side. The old L &NE bridge once crossed over the gap. The remains of the bridge piers can be seen on the left.
