DELAWARE AND HUDSON
Binghamton, New York area
Binghamton has always been a major point on the D & H. It was the main western terminus of the railroad with connections with the Erie and Lackawanna, which obviously became the Erie-Lackawanna in 1960.
The main yard in Binghamton was called Bevier Street. It served the D&H until the early 1980's when the old Lackawanna yard was rebuilt and the D&H moved there. Since they took over the former Lackawanna main south to Scranton, PA, this was a logical move.
Here at Bevier Street, 754 arrives, while several other big U33C units wait for their next trip.
RS-32 5019 is a unit used for switching the yard. The D & H owned numerous Alco units. 1976
In typical Binghamton winter weather, a trio of C-628's wait at the yard entrance.
On the same cold, snowy day in March 1976, an RS-3 works the yard.
One operation that was shared with the Lehigh Valley was the interchange trip from Binghamton to Sayre. The train ran west over the E-L to Owego, then used a portion of a LV branch into Sayre, PA.
Here, U23B 2312 departs Binghamton for Sayre passing some E-L units by the station. 1974.
Passing under Route 17 Arriving at Sayre on LV track. May 5, 1974
Under Guilford, Maine Central units could be found anywhere. Here, in 1983, a train for Buffalo passes through the old Erie station in Elmira, NY.
Following the move to the Lackawanna yard in East Binghamton, the engine terminal began to get crowded with a lot of interesting stuff. These are some pictures from the early 1980's.
