DELAWARE & HUDSON
The Albany to Binghamton mainline page
This page shall cover the main through the middle of New York between two of the main cities served by the D & H. The Albany area was the junction with the Boston and Maine, while Binghamton was a major interchange point with the Erie-Lackawanna. We will begin in the Albany area. For the Montreal-Albany main, click here.
Before we head southwest to Binghamton, let me note that there were two other yards in the Albany area not covered here. One was Mohawk yard located near Schenectady and the other was a small interchange yard with Conrail (nee-NYC) at Rotterdam Junction.
The junction of the line to Albany and to Schenectady was located at Delanson, NY. The line to Albany goes to the right.
The first station building on the Albany-Binghamton main was Central Bridge.
Cobleskill has a very beautiful station.
Here is former Lehigh Valley C-420 405 leading PYME (Potomac Yard to Mechanicville) east on May 18, 1984.
The top of the grade out of the Mohawk River valley is located at Richmondville. Here is a U33C leading a westbound at the top of the hill in 1974.
405 just west of Richmondville.
An interesting small station was located at Worcester, NY. 1984.
Here again is 405 near Schenevus, NY. The new Interstate Highway provided many new vantage points for photography, albeit at the expense of the railroad that lost traffic to trucks.
Cooperstown Junction. The little Cooperstown and Charlottesville was home to Walter Rich's railroad.
Oneonta is a large town about midway between Albany and Binghamton. It was once the home of the D & H car shops.
Some pictures in the yard taken in September 1974.
2312 was used on the Preamble Express in 1975 to prepare the route for the 1976 Bi-Centennial Steam Train.
"FA" tower controlled all movements in the area.
751 on a westbound as viewed from the tower.
On May 18, 1984, 7418 (ex-Reading GP-39) leads an eastbound past the now closed tower.
7418 roars through the small town of Otego, NY at full throttle.
7418 departs Sidney following a stop to pick a cut of auto racks. Sidney is where the old Ontario and Western crossed enroute to the upstate town of Oswego. The O & W shut down back in 1957.
The Bainbridge depot now houses the local police department.
Back in the mid-1970's a U33C and a C-628 head a westbound enroute to Binghamton at Ninevah Junction. It was here that the line south to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre joined the line to Binghamton.
In 1984, 7418 heads east passing the operators cabin at Ninevah Junction.
A former Lehigh Valley C-420 408 leads a mixed bag of units east crossing the Harpursville trestle. These were the early Guilford days and Boston and Maine power was found all over the D & H.
7418 exits the east portal of the Belden tunnel. Located at the top of the grade coming out of Binghamton, this is the only tunnel on this line.
The old station at Sanataria Springs.
408 passing through Port Crane, NY climbing the hill to Belden.
Both trains we have been following pass through the former D & H yard in Binghamton. This yard was known as Bevier St. yard. It was closed by Guilford when they rebuilt the old Lackawanna yard in East Binghamton.
Binghamton area pictures will follow in a few weeks.
