CONRAIL
This page will begin a trip west across New York State from Schnectady to Buffalo. This was once the mainline of the New York Central Railroad. Always maintained in good condition even in Penn Central days, it sees several Amtrak trains daily and plenty of freight. Today's owner is CSX. As with most images on this site, the majority are from the 1980's.
The Schnectady station area in 1986. The line swinging off to the right is the D & H connection used by the Adirondack to Montreal.
West of Schnectady is the town of Hoffmans.
It is here that the freight line over to Selkirk joins the mainline from Albany.
A CN run through crosses over to the eastbound side to access the junction. 1997.
The town of Fonda, NY. Once a junction point with the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloverville Railway.
Utica, NY. That tower once handled many train movements.
A set of Conrail C-30-7's roll eastbound in 1997.
At one time a shortline operated almost all of the ex-NYC branch north to the Adirondack Mountains. This is a very rare Alco model RSC-3. It was built originally for the Seaboard Railroad.
SD50 6745 westbound west of Utica. Is left hand running normal here ?
This old freight house sat (sits?) in Oriskany, NY. 1986.
The next town along the main is Rome. The depot is south of town.
GP40 3282 rips through the station with a westbound TV train. 1997.
Amtrak F40 226 westbound passing through Oneida. The old Ontario & Western once crossed right here.
Eastbound at Canastota, NY. 1986.
