Compare this old photo circa 1935 to the photo above taken in 2010. Close Yes! You can make out some SPRR cut crossing in the center photo along the hillside. that makes 8.5 miles of railroad grading up this valley to the tunnels.

Above L&R. Standing in the same place as the old photographer who took the photo on the left. Look at the back ground hills.

Above l&r: Same east portal Allegheny Railroad tunnel but over 100 years apart.

Above: Same west portal of the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel. The turnpike portal (r) and railroad portal behind brick wall (l) tunnels.

Above: From the railroad work site (turnpike today) looking down onto the Henry Felton Farm. Mp. 128 on Pa. Trpk.

Above: Both views of the cut at the Allegheny Tunnel view looking west from above the railroad tunnel alignment.

Above: Somerset interchange looking south east. The alternate SPRR/PW&S grade entering at the interchange on the right. B&O grade along the left side.

Above: Somerset looking north through town. The South Penn is located six miles north of this town.

Above: Looking east through the town of Burnt Cabins. The SPRR would be where the turnpike is out of the picture to the right.

Above: Left Then, Right Now.

Above: Using 1939 (left) aerial photos to check out the railroad maps (right).

Above: Use this aerial to see the changes in this same location west of Burnt Cabins.

Above: A survey was done into the Cowans Gap State Park site. This was a possible route to eliminate the Tuscarora Tunnel.

Above: Use this photo to compare it to the post card above.
