Photo Collections
One of the Museum's most significant acquisitions
were the Douglas Leigh archives that were donated by
the Borghese family of New York and New Jersey. The collection
includes more than 800 objects, including 4 x 5-in. negatives
of Douglas Leigh installations; slides (primarily of design
sketches for proposed projects); two scrapbook-like collections
of newspaper and magazine clippings; three photo albums of installations;
hundreds of 16mm film tracks of the Leigh-designed Epok "silhouette"
sign animations; numerous miscellaneous papers, including Leigh-owned
patents; and even Leigh's Rolodex. The voluminous collection
was catalogued for the Museum by Becky Herman, an M.A. graduate
of the University of Cincinnati. |
The archives of the late Frank Page,
noted Texas sign designer, were donated to the Museum by the
Page family, with the coordination of the Texas Sign Association.
The collection of photos spanned more than a half-century of
signs, outdoor boards and signshop scenes between 1910 and 1960.

The 36 x 46-in. vintage photo blow-up
depicts a 1920s signshop, which according to the dealer
from whom the photo was acquired, was probably located in the
Louisville, KY area. |
