After many years of preparation and planning, the Titahi Bay RSA has acquired a 105mm L5 Howitzer. This particular piece was used by 161 Depot Bty at Papakura Camp as a training weapon during the Vietnam War. The weapon was later deployed to the various Territorial Artillery units before being decommissioned in 1992. It now has pride of place in front of the Titahi Bay RSA at 74 Main Road, Titahi Bay, painted in desert camouflage.
The ceremony involved a welcome from President Des Panui, a karakea by Piko Arthur (Kaumatua of Ngati Toa), the dedication itself by Ron Elder (Salvation Army), Last Post, one minute silence and Reveille (bugler Colin Simpson, flag Dave Bähler), the Ode by David Cox, MBE, (President NZRSA), an address from Col RA Burns, OBE, and the unveiling of the plaque. After the unveiling, everyone was invited inside the RSA for port and madeira cake and the rest of the ceremony. The ceremony inside was conducted by Capt Lindsay Skinner. David Cox spoke again, reporting on the very healthy nature of the RSA movement and its rosy future before the Loyal Toast and the Toast to the Regiment.
The members of the Titahi Bay RSA are to be congratulated on their achievement and on the warmth of their hospitality. Not only did they provide a history of the L5 and the Legend of St Barbara, they laid on a barbecue lunch after the ceremony. It was an occasion enjoyed by the many gunners who attended from around the lower North Island.
