Disappearing Guns

Fig. 5: The piece of one of Fort Bastion's 6-inch Armstrong guns together with portions of the original 8-inch gun from South Battery cut up and abandoned by the scrap merchant. It is believed the high cost and inordinate amout of gas required to cut up the equipments led him to give up the project. We should be grateful his action has left Auckland an interesting museum piece as well as a prime tourist attraction. The remaining portions of the gun are buried near the Memorial Saluting Battery.
