Fig. 3: HP system in loading position. In the firing position cylinder 'b' was filled with liquid and cylinders 'c' with compressed air. On recoil the ram 'k' forced liquid into cylinders 'c' via valve 'e' and tubes 'f', further compressing the air in cylinders 'c'. Operation of the raising valve permitted the air to rush up the ram and return the gun to the firing position. Pump 'o' was used to bring the gun to the loading position without firing, eg for drill purposes.
