Lover's Leap

Standing about 250 feet high, a sharply perpendicular rock rises above the dirt road (Larimer County Road 43F) just to the south of the Virginia Dale Stage Station. For many years, legends have surrounded this rock formation, now called Lovers Leap. One such legend is about a Cheyenne Indian Warrior, who fell in love with a Ute maiden. Because of tribal laws, the young man was not allowed to marry the maiden. The young man, despairing of ever being lawfully joined to this beautiful young maid, stole her away. All too soon, the Ute tribe was in hot pursuit, and the couple stole to the top of this tall rock. They were surrounded. Clasping each other in a close embrace, they jumped, meeting death on the sharp rocks below.
