Here's a workshop that really plunges the ambitious craftsman into the thick of complex joinery. Students are taught how to conceptualize and layout compound angles using traditional geometric drawings ("developed drawings"), the "Hawkindale angles" and trigonometry. In this course we will demonstrate various methods of laying out and cutting hip and valley systems, including jack rafters and purlins. Using lofting, framing square, calculator and visualization, students will determine rafter lengths and joinery in the mock-up of large scale models and conventional drafting exercises. Please note: This is an advanced course, and we recommend people to have some experience in basic drafting, calculator trig functions and/or conventional compound roof framing.
