In this workshop we begin with a stack of rough sawn timbers and end with the raising of a complete, finely crafted frame. The frame is purposely designed as a teaching tool and, as such, incorporates a wide variety of pegged mortise and tenon joinery. The "Square Rule" technique taught in this class allows the framer to layout and cut perfect joinery on imperfect timbers, which is how rough sawn timbers come from sawmills. Additionally, students learn how to cut and fit joinery using only hand tools (no power tools)--we believe this is the best way to get new framers started. This is an excellent introduction to hands-on timber framing. Evening sessions will be devoted to slide presentations and lectures on enclosure systems, basic engineering and the like.
