Nel Brown Propst, author of "Forgotten People, A History of the South Platte Trail" was the highlight of the Overland Trail Dedication Ceremony. She spoke with passion and fervor about the South Platte, the Overland Trail, and people along the South Platte during the period of 1863 to 1865.Dale Morgan, a noted Western historian and author, says this of Nel Propst: "Few historians write as well as Nel Propst, but fewer still are able to tell the story of their region that will engage the reader."
Nel's letter to me put all of our feelings about the Dedication Ceremony into coherent meaningful words. She writes:
"I shall never forget the Dedication Ceremony of the Overland Trail. The vista of unspoiled land was a perfect backdrop and an eloquent recognition that the problems of the West continue. I commend your group for trying to save such historic and beautiful places, and at the same time trying to help with problems of the people who live on or near them.Nel Brown Propst has written several books about the Eastern Colorado Plains, and the history of the South Platte. Some are out of print, but they are all available at Barnes and Noble. It seems to me that even large groups of concerned and interested people cannot accomplish such unless there is one dedicated person who decides that an event is absolutely going to happen. You are apparently that person who achieved the listing of the Overland Trail and who organized a meaningful celebration.
I was struck by the variety of people who came and who obviously felt an emotional attachment to our past and to the landscape that we share with those long ago seekers."
