Ten Mile Hill

Sherman, Fairfield County, Connecticut

History:

1979-80   --  local citizens of the Town of Sherman secured title to a large tract of land covering Ten Mile Hill and adjacent highland at Sherman's northern corner.  The land was later transferred to the National Park Service as a wilderness preserve for the relocated Appalachian Trail.

Heading north to south: 

The Appalachian trail follows the Housatonic River to Ten Mile River Gorge, and then up to the top of Ten Mile Hill.

This section is somewhat strenuous.  It brings the hiker high above the Housatonic River to Ten Mile Gorge and the summit of Ten Mile Hill with great views of the Litchfield hills

A different perspective, heading south to north:

From Ten Mile Hill the Appalachian trail head down to where the very shallow and rocky Ten Mill River (that forms the Town of Sherman's boundary with the Town of Kent) dumps into the Housatonic River.  There is a foot bridge over the Ten Mile River and then follows the west bank of the Housatonic River to Bulls Bridge Road.
