River Road
River Road, Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut

Directions:

This trail is just north of parking area for the St. John’s Ledges.

From the war memorial in Kent on Route 7 north turn left and take Route 341 west for 0.2 of a mile across the Housatonic River to take the very first right after the bridge (Skiff Mountain Road). Drive 1.1 miles to the junction with River Road. Turn onto River Road and drive 2.7 miles (passing the parking area for St. John’s ledges) and, at the gate, park in the parking area.

Trails:

The trail is very simple. Walk along the road via the white-blazed Appalachian Trail. You can walk until you get tired and want to turn back. The trail crosses North Kent Brook and then Stewart Hollow Brook. Once over the latter brook, a short path takes you northeast to Stewart Hollow Brook Shelter on the AT. You can turn around here or go farther.   (Source: Laubach and Smith, #9)

7/02/2005.  On a beautiful day, Rosemary Cooney, Sarah-David Rosenbaum, Ceferino Santana, dog Sonar and I walked along the trail.  We did a lot of investigation of the river shore line and found some species that we had never seen before.  And that's always a good feeling.  We had a nice breeze coming off the water and the entire crew enjoyed the smell of the water.  It looked to us as if they had cut down the red pines.  Tree trunks were lying all over the place on both sides of the trail.  I have never seen so much ostrich fern in one place.
