Putnam Cottage

243 East Putnam Avenue (Route 1). Tours from April through December, Wed, Fri, and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

This cottage was used during the Revolutionary nary War as a meeting place of military leaders. This included former resident General Israel Putnam, who was second in command to George Washington.

The house was built around 1692. In the cottage is Putnam’s desk, Bible, glasses, and military uniform. Also here is the mirror through which it is said he saw the coming of the British troops.

Putnam made his famous ride down the steep stone cliff east of the cottage. This is reenacted on the last Sunday of February.
