The Iron Gall Ink Corrosion Website A site which tells you everything you could possibly need to know about iron gall ink, including how to make it, and problems of conservation. It is no longer currently online but I have grabbed it back here from The Internet Archive. It is replaced by The Iron Gall Ink Website, but that appears to be currently unfinished.

The Ink Compendium And another site with several ancient ink recipes, also only available now from The Internet Archive.

Monastic Ink: linking chemistry and history A fascinating article on making iron gall ink as a school science project, with a bit more detailed chemistry than is found in some other articles. A great bit of interdisciplinary teaching technique apart from anything else.

Cutting Quill Pens from Feathers Just what it says, with detailed instructions and photos.

Regia Anglorum - Quills This sub-section of the very interesting Anglo-Saxon re-enactment site provides techniques for the production of quill pens and some ancient recipes for ink. They actually do it so they know it works.

Medieval Illumination and Calligraphy A how to do it guide to medieval calligraphy and illumination. The site includes a section of photographs of scribal tools in museums. The author is also a fantasy and sci-fi buff and a highly creative member of SCA.

Waxed Tablets from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages A simple link page to images of actual examples of these strangely neglected scribal tools, as well as depictions in manuscript illustration.

Skrifarinn The personal web site of "the only contemporary scribe in Iceland" who produces beautiful calligraphic reproductions, complete with illustrations, of ancient Icelandic manuscripts. She is looking for folks of similar interest to start up an Icelandic medieval re-enactment group, so this is one for the saga buffs. It is in English as well as Icelandic.
