The first known book to be printed in color
peeled off the press of Johann Fust and his son-in-law, Peter Schoeffer.
Fust, a former partner of Gutenberg's, provided
sizeable loans to the Mainz printer, and when the good Gutenberg could
not pay them back, Fust received on default Gutenberg's press, in 1455.
Fust and Schoeffer produced the Mainz Psalter in 1457, an excerpt of which is depicted at left, integrating multiple colored inks.
