Congratulations on a fine site. My father, Harry Cochrane, served with the RCASC as a CMP truck driver and dispatch rider on Indian motorcycles. He went to France in July, 1994 and continued on to Germany. He never spoke much about his experiences. I would like to learn more about the day-to-day lives of drivers like him..the sights and sounds of the road from Normandy to Nijmegen.

I am doing research with the purpose to honour our Canadian Volunteers of WWII, the problem is most of them rather not talk about it, so if you can refer me to veterans whom would like to get it off their chest, I would really appreciate it.
My grand father and my mother's second husband (whom I called Dad of my own choosing until he died in 1990), both served in the boiler room of different ships during WWII, I would like to make sure my nephews know how much their great-grand-father and their grand-dad had to suffer to insure them of a Freedom that otherwise they might take for granted.

I am trying to find out if my uncle is still alive. He joined the 48th Highlanders of Toronto, in 1939,(I believe). He was sent overseas, naturally. I remember hearing Mom telling us he used to ride a motorcycle, but due to an injured knee, could not do so anymore. I also heard he became a cook, and being called the "Pie King". He married an English lady, Phyllis Penny. He came home to Hamilton when his tour of duty was over. They moved to what was then called Freeman, now a part of Burlington, Ontario. I remember he took a course in Carpentry through the Veteran's Affairs; but worked at A.V. Roe. He had one daughter, Joy.

Am now trying to find out who were participating in shooting at me. Love all the comments and the very obvious pride of Canadians in what they are and what their countrymen have done. So what difference do a few shells mean, as long as they all missed me

Visited your site after getting the link from David Robinson.
I am Trying to research The Canadian Dodge Truck as driven by mt Father, landing at juno beach with the British 2nd. Army "Flying column" as a driver in 262. Coy. R.A.S.C.
Since the lions share of the troops landing at juno were Canadian he would be intersested if any of the surviving ones can remember "The Flying Column" the rapid supply unit of the 2d. Army.
I enjoyed looking at your site and found it informative.
If you want to use any of his pictures for you site l'm sure he will give permission.
Thank You.

Just today I looked at your website and I really was impressed. My parents and I were liberated by the Canadian Armies on April 3rd 1945 in the Netherlands. As far as I know our Liberators were the Manitoba Dragoons and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. My husband and I emigrated to Canada in 1982, and since 1986 we are proud to be Canadians!
I'm still grateful to the Canadian soldiers who liberated us, and we often go to schools to talk about it,to make the students aware of their courageous ancestors.

I sent the following to CBC, as a suggestion for their "National" news program:
The National,
CBC (TV) News
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Many of us, when thinking about Canada's roles in past wars, recall such names as Vimy Ridge, Dieppe, and Normandy.
However, there is little known of another significant Allied effort, involving many Canadian soldiers. That is the Liberation of The Netherlands, which occurred in May 1945.
To give you and idea of the significance to Canadians of this event, we can look at the Commonwealth War Graves in The Netherlands in which Canadian soldiers are buried:
Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery War Stone: 2338 Canadians buried here near Nijmegan , Netherlands. They were killed near the end of the European war in 1945
Holten Canadian War Cemetery: 1355 Canadians buried here in a forest near Arnhem. They died in 1945 during the late part of the European war.
Bergen-Op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery: There are 904 Canadian soldiers and 64 airmen buried here located in Holland not far from the Belgium border and the city of Antwerp. Most were killed in late 1944 during the clearing of the Scheldt estuary.
The people of The Netherlands never forget the efforts of The Allied soldiers in the Liberation of their country. They have a day, May 5th: Liberation Day, in which every school child is made aware of what happened during the Nazi Occupation of The Netherlands for 5 years during World War II.
And they remember the Liberation. And because of the Liberation, The people of The Netherlands think very highly of the Canadians who risked so much to help their country. But in Canada, this effort seems to have been all but forgotten.
I would like to see on "The National" a special reminding Canadians that there also was The Liberation of The Netherlands. And as Canadians, we should remember our soldiers who gave up so much; and learn about the current warm relations that exist between The Netherlands and Canada as a result of this Liberation.
One of the results of the Liberation (and the destruction of some of The Netherlands during WWII), was the post-war immigration of hundreds of thousands of Dutch to Canada.
This topic should concern all Canadians, and is currently of special interest to the following groups:
The people of The Netherlands
Veterans Affairs
Canadian War Museum
Friendship Windmill, Ottawa
Dutch clubs in Canada: Canada Netherlands Friendship Association (CNFA), Dutch-Canadian Association, Netherlands Luncheon Club, Toronto,
Dutch newspapers in Canada: The Windmill Herald, Surrey, B.C., The Nederlanse Courant, Burlington, Ontario

This major was with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. It would be interesting to know if anyone has any information about this person - dad thinks he was from New Germany (or somewhere on the mainland of Nova Scotia.

At this time I am searching for services for my mother who is in a manor here in Iroquois Falls. I am rather appalled at the fact that if I do not buy her Attends she must wear cloth ones which were worn by who knows who the day before(washed of course) I will quit eating if I have to to make sure she gets her Attends (approximately one and a half cases a month)I think what bothers me the most is that my wonderful father George Irwin MacDonald fought in World War II, became an alcoholic and addicted to cigarettes during the war, died of throat and lung cancer in 1993 would roll over in his grave if he knew the financial shape Mom was in. She receives a basic CPP and OAS, I have tried to access funds this year for her to pay for relining of dentures, Attends, glasses, drug bills etc. etc. All she has left is about $150.00 monthly and this does not cover her expense. I hurt my back nursing in 1988 and receive a small pension of $354.00 mthly. At the present time, my spouse, who is not even her son is paying all of her extras. What the heck is going on here???? It seems so unfair that Dad did give his life, only not in the war, for his country and his widow is left with nothing. Dad would not talk about the war, only that it hurt him to see his friends blown up beside him. He was 18 years old. He wanted to go to war so bad he lied about his age. Fighting for his country was something he would never have run from. I wonder, today, if he knew how it would afffect him if he would still do it.(probably)Does anyone have ideas on how to access funds for her. I am writing to the Minister Ron Duhamel, who knows. I am sure there are people out there who are in the same predicament concerning survivors.
