Redactioneel
Starend over de Adriatische Zee rustte de redactie uit van Gouden Hoorn II-1 en deed ideeën op voor dit nummer. We bevonden ons op de stranden van Ravenna, bekend van het Exarchaat. In dit rustige stadje zijn zoveel kerken met prachtige mozaieken te bewonderen, dat je dagenlang zoet bent.
Enfin, zo deden we genoeg inspiratie op om wederom een Gouden Hoorn te vullen. Dit maal extra dik! Met onder andere: een lezing over de heilige Synkletike, zoals uitgesproken op een bijeenkomst van de Kerngroep Vroege Middeleeuwen, een nieuwe rubriek, 'Byz-Niz', en een essay over de San Marco in Venetië.
Onze gastschrijver is deze keer Robert van Altena. Hij studeert geschiedenis aan de UvA, en besprak voor Gouden Hoorn het interessante boek van de historicus MacMullen: Christianizing the Roman Empire.
Wij hopen dat u ditmaal weer geniet van uw Gouden Hoorn, tot over een half jaar.

This issue contains articles on Ravenna and Venice, because the editors visited these fine cities in Sept.'94. The article on Ravenna discusses some beautiful and very old Byzantine churches in and around this area, and the San Marco in Venice is described as an example of the decay of the city that once brought Constantinople to the downfall of 1204. Before these articles, there is a paper on Syncletica of Alexandria, a female saint who lived an ascetical life and taught other females in her Vita how to live as 'Brides of Christ'. Her theories are similar to the theorie of the eight logismoi, as written down by Evagrius of Pontus.
Our guestwriter, Robert van Altena, discusses Ramsey MacMullen's book Christianizing the Roman Empire and finds differences between MacMullen's point of view and Robin Lane Fox's regarding the conversion to christianity of people in the Roman Empire: the latter proves that evangelisation might have played a larger role in the conversion than suggested by MacMullen.
Furthermore in this issue a new heading: Byzniz, with information about symposia and expositions.
