• 5920
  "The properties between Rittenhouse Street and West Haines Street are on lot No. 15, drawn in the name of Jacob (T)ellner. In 1714 it was owned by John Williams. In 1766 the corner properties are in the names of B. Engle and Jacob and Mary Keyser. In 1805, Charles Engle, a son of Benjamin Engle, deeded the ground where the present No. 5920 stands to Joseph Jacobs, the 'London Tailor.' He built the present house. It was the first large house built between Rittenhouse Street and the Engle house (No. 5938). Jacobs had a considerable reputation as a tailor, and he was usually patronized by those who could afford to pay a dollar or two more than the usual price for a coat, because of his skill. He was a prominent member of the Methodist church, and was one of their early class leaders.

• 5922 In 1847 this property belonged to Samuel Keyser, and the store at No. 5924 was rented to Doctors Henry J. and William H. Squire, who opened a drug store here as a branch of their establishment at the southeast corner of Collom Street and Germantown Avenue. On an old prescription of Dr. T. Forrest Betton is printed, 'N.B. Prescriptions compounded with accuracy, and attention paid to the general quality of drugs by Messrs H.J. and W.H. Squire at their drug stores in Germantown, one opposite the Buttonwood Hotel--the other near the Toll Gate.' Later on the last paragraph was changes so as to read,--'the other corner of Haines Street above the Toll Gate, they having removed to the opposite northwest corner, where the drug store of A. deB. Keim now is.

  After the removal of the Squires' Reuben Keyser carried on the grocery business at No. 5922 for many years, and the place is still owned by his descendants."
