PREPARATION FOR OPERATION

  1. Check that the fan gear unit oil level is up to spillover of the fill pipe.

  2. Check the lubricating oil of the generator gear unit. The dipstick is marked EMPTY - ADD - FULL. Proper level is between the ADD and FULL marks.

  3. Check that the diesel engine overspeed device located on the left side of the engine is reset.

  4. Check that the engine barring-over device is removed from the engine.

  5. Check that the following air cut-out cocks are open :

  1. Air compressor governor
  2. Control air
  3. Safety control
  4. Bell, horn and window wiper
  5. Overspeed control
  1. Check that the brake-pipe angle cock is "cut-in" (vertical position)

  2. The brake valve pilot cut-out cock (double-heading cock) should be properly positioned (open)

  3. The MU-2A valve must be positioned according to the location of the unit in the locomotive consist and the type brake equipment in the lead locomotive.

  4. Check the positions of the Automatic and Independent brake valve handles. The Automatic brake valve handle should be removed on all trail units and the Independent handles in RELEASE if not removable.

  5. Move the engine control switch to START.

  6. Check that the throttle handle is in IDLE.

  7. Check that the dead-engine cock is in LIVE (or closed) position.
