SA-26 INDEPENDENT BRAKE VALVE
(See
Figure 1)

The Independent brake valve handle applies and releases the brakes on the locomotive consist or releases the brakes on the locomotive unit alone, after an automatic or emergency application.

The Independent brake valve has two positions, RELEASE and FULL APPLICATION, with the application zone between. The brake valve is of the self-lapping type which automatically maintains brake cylinder pressure when the application pressure reaches a value corresponding to the handle position. An Independent brake application can be released only be movement of the handle toward the RELEASE position. An automatic Service or Emergency application can be released on the locomotive consist by depressing the Independent brake valve handle in the RELEASE position. The handle must be held down; otherwise, brake application will return if the handle is released.

MU-2A VALVE (See Figure 1)

The MU-2A valve is a two-position valve located on the Control Console. It enables the locomotive to be operated with locomotive units equipped with either 26L or 24RL air equipment. The valve positions are as follows :

  1. LEAD OR DEAD - This position is used when the locomotive unit is operated singly or when it is the lead unit of a multiple-unit consist. This position is also used when the locomotive unit is hauled "dead in train."

  2. TRAIN 24 OR 26 - This position is used to trail a lead locomotive having 24RL or 26L brake equipment.

PENALTY RESET VALVE (Pilot Air Valve)
(See
Figure 1)

The Penalty Reset valve located on the control console is used after a penalty air brake application has occurred. To reset the air brake system to normal operation after such a penalty fault has been corrected, depress the reset valve and hold until a click is heard at the P-2A Brake Application Valve. Then the valve can be released and the system will continue charging to normal operating condition.
