9-20-02 Train Service on Lower Boonton Line Comes to an End

Operation on the "lower" Boonton Line, serving Benson Street, Rowe Street, and Arlington stations will come to an end today as NJ TRANSIT phases in the new Montclair Connection. Temporary schedules will be in effect from September 23rd - September 29th, and the new "Montclair-Boonton Line" launches September 30th, featuring MidTOWN Direct service into New York Penn Station, as well as Hoboken Terminal. 5-15-02 Hoboken Ferry Slip Restoration Project Advances

The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors today advanced plans to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to fast-track the restoration of six original ferry slips at historic Hoboken Terminal. Press Release.

4-10-02 NJ TRANSIT Unveils New Locomotive & Passenger Cars

The newest additions of the NJ TRANSIT rail fleet -- the ALP-46 high-horsepower electric locomotive and the Comet V rail car -- were unveiled today by NJDOT Board Chairman James P. Fox at the Corporation’s Meadows Maintenance Complex (MMC) in Kearny. Press Release.

1-18-02 Own a Piece of the Bergen Tunnel

NJ TRANSIT is selling bricks and rocks from the north tube of the former DL&W Bergen Tunnels. NJ TRANSIT is currently rehabilitating the tunnels, which includes the re-lining of the inside of the bore. More information.

1-4-02 Lackawanna Steam Era Comes to a Close

The last active DL&W steam locomotive engineer, Bill Davidson, is set to retire from NJ TRANSIT on January 4th, 2002. 12-12-01 Montclair Connection Opening Draws Closer

In anticipation of the opening of the Montclair Connection in spring 2002, NJ TRANSIT will begin testing overhead wires that provide power to the connection’s new signal system this week. Press Release

11-11-01 First New ALP46 Unveiled

Bombardier Transportation presented the first of 29 electric multipurpose locomotives for New Jersey Transit (NJT) at a roll-out ceremony at its facility in Kassel, Germany. The design of the Class ALP 46 type electric locomotives is derived from the German Railway's Class 101. More than 145 locomotives of this type have been operating successfully for the German Railway (DB) since 1996. More information available on the ALP46 Page

10-02-01 Bad News out of Mexico

According to sources in Mexico and the United States, the fleet of U34CH locomotives that were sold to Alstom (GEC-Alstom at the time) by Conrail have all been taken out of service. Since their arrival in Mexico, the U-Boats have been limited to local yard service due to their brake systems. Now it would seem that the era of the U34CH has come to an end in North America for now.

9-25-01 NJ TRANSIT to Take Over Amtrak "Clockers" Service?

According to the Courier-News, NJ TRANSIT's board voted to take over operation of Amtrak's "Clocker" service sometime during the next five years on the Northeast Corridor Line. NJ TRANSIT will acquire locomotives and passenger cars from Amtrak to operate the "new" service until new locomotives and cars are recieved. NJ TRANSIT hopes to have their "Clockers" running in 2006. 9-25-01 NJ TRANSIT Board Approves New Locomotives

With service demand increasing each day, NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors is taking steps to ensure that the Corporation is using state-of-the-art equipment to transport its more than 110,000 rail customers. Today, the Board awarded a $175.3 million contract with Alstom Transportation Inc. of Hornell, NY to purchase 33 diesel locomotives. Press Release.

9-21-01 New Station for Montclair State University

A new rail station on the Boonton Line -- offering direct service to midtown Manhattan -- is coming to the campus of Montclair State University (MSU). Press Release.
