First Commercial FM Station in New York City, W71NY is a model Ultra-Modern Installation.
Pictured above the first rack contains monitoring equipment, beyond it is the original 1-KW Western Electric transmitter. This is connected to a separate coaxial transmitting antenna and the filaments are on at all times during broadcast hours and can be switched in matter of seconds. The next rack is a 100 watt transmitter for communications with mobile pick-up units when they are on remotes. The next 5 racks contain the speech input equipment, the 10 KW transmitter is at the far right.
The W71NY transmitter room is located on the 42nd floor at 444 Madison Avenue, the studios are at 1440 Broadway, less that a mile away. W71NY is currently using vertical polarization. W71NY has the first Western Electric 10-KW transmitter to be delivered.
Bamberger's experimental station W2XWI, later W2XOR, started in Cataret NJ in August 1939. The transmitter moved to 444 Madison Avenue in June 1940. Shifted to full power on November 30, 1941 The station would become commercial station W71NY then WOR-FM, WBAM returning to WOR-FM.
